For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google Trends<\/a> lets you see what people are typing into Google (bear in mind, it\u2019s not great for unearthing very niche lower-volume trends. For that you\u2019d need to use the analytics in Google Ads. There are lots of non-Google tools out there too, but it\u2019s an easy place to start)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">check out the best-selling products on <strong>other marketplaces<\/strong> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Etsy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">eBay<\/a>. All of them have a range of lists showing what\u2019s trending and which products are in high demand \u2013 across different product categories, as well as for top sellers within product categories. The look, feel and name of your product has the power to increase its perceived value, even without changing a thing about the manufacturing process or quality of the item itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Products that are considered to have high profit margins (especially for businesses that manage to crack the branding) include jewellery, vaping and e-cigarettes, furniture, and alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you\u2019re not particularly drawn to selling a product that meets an unmet need in the market or scratches your own itch, this could be the strategy for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2checkthatyoureabletosourceanddeliveryourproduct\">2. Check that you\u2019re able to source and deliver your product<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve settled on your idea for the product you want to sell online, you\u2019ll need to get hold of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have three main sourcing methods to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The DIY option<\/strong> \u2013 where you take charge of everything yourself, from the design to the manufacturing to the marketing to the <a href=\"\/knowledge\/strategy\/best-eco-friendly-packaging-materials-for-small-businesses\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1543\">packaging<\/a> and delivery. For example, buying a sewing machine and the materials you need to make coronavirus face masks, for example.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Custom manufacturing<\/strong> \u2013 meaning that you work with a manufacturer to develop your product to your desired spec, they produce it for you, then you manage the rest of the process.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Working with a wholesaler<\/strong> \u2013 in this case, you\u2019re not involved in developing the product. You simply buy a manufacturer\u2019s existing stock from them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the last two in this list, <a href=\"https:\/\/flippa.com\/blog\/is-dropshipping-worth-it-the-pros-and-cons-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dropshipping is an option<\/a>. This means you never actually take physical delivery of the product, and you\u2019re not responsible for shipping it out to your customers either. It\u2019s handled by the manufacturer directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3testthewaterbeforeyougoallin\">3. Test the water before you go all-in<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think you\u2019ve settled on the product you want to sell online? It\u2019s tempting to get caught up in the excitement and rush ahead. But to avoid the disappointment of launching to crickets (not to mention wasting money on materials and marketing), you\u2019ll want to gauge that you\u2019re on the right track first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick way to do this is what\u2019s known as a \u201cfake door test\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/woorise.com\/how-to-create-a-landing-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Build a landing page<\/a> that describes your product as if it exists already, set up a few paid ads on search or social to drive relevant traffic towards it, and have a call-to-action on the page for people to leave their email and sign up for early access. If nobody signs up, it\u2019s a sign that something\u2019s up. And if you\u2019ve done your due diligence to research the demand for the product, you might just need to fine-tune some of the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, the one thing you shouldn\u2019t do is ask friends and family whether they\u2019d buy it.
