This guide is designed to help you with that first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"governmentbackedsmallbusinesssupportadviceandmentoring\">Government-backed small business support, advice and mentoring<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the financial support it&#8217;s provided for small businesses and the self-employed in response to the severe disruption caused by coronavirus, the government has also set up non-financial support. These include one-to-one expert advice, leadership skills training and peer networking.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"recoveryadviceforbusinessscheme\">Recovery Advice for Business scheme<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has set up the Recovery Advice for Business scheme to help small business owners get through coronavirus and adapt their operations, so they can recover in the long term.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The free business advice covers a range of topics, including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">accountancy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">legal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">advertising and marketing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">recruitment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">digital<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the government website, thousands of UK business experts have stepped forward to lend their expertise. Small Business Minister, Paul Scully, said: \u201cIt is incredible to see so many professional advisers stepping up to do their bit for small businesses across the country. This advice platform will help to boost our recovery from the impact of coronavirus, giving small businesses extra support to adapt their business models and come back fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each adviser has offered at least one hour of small business support a month until the end of 2020. You can access the free service on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enterprisenation.com\/freesupport\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Enterprise Nation<\/a> website, where you can:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">set up your business profile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">take a business health check to make sure you\u2019re directed to the support you need<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">connect with relevant advisers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"smallbusinessleadershipprogramme\">Small Business Leadership Programme<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK government&#8217;s department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has set aside \u00a320 million to fund two new support schemes for businesses with between five and 249 employees. The Small Business Leadership Programme is one of those schemes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a free 10-week programme providing training in strategic leadership skills, giving you the &#8220;confidence to make informed decisions that boost business performance.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify for the scheme, you&#8217;ll need to be based in England and have been trading for at least a year. You&#8217;ll need an internet connection and a device to join the programme, which will be delivered online initially.<\/p>\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/smallbusinesscharter.org\/small-business-leadership-programme\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">register for the Small Business Leadership Programme<\/a> on the government website.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"peernetworks\">Peer Networks<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other scheme being funded out of the \u00a320 million pot from BEIS is Peer Networks. This is your chance to discuss your business challenges in group sessions with your peers. The idea is that you&#8217;ll gain valuable feedback to help you come up with solutions you might not be able to work through on your own \u2013 several heads are better than one.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sessions are free and run by expert facilitators.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify, you&#8217;ll need to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">be based in England<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">have between five and 249 employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">have been trading for at least a year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">have a <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/what-is-business-turnover\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1577\" >turnover<\/a> of at least \u00a3100,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peernetworks.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">register for Peer Networks<\/a> on the government website.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whereelsecanigetbusinessadvice\">Where else can I get business advice?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick search reveals lots of free advice available online, and our Knowledge centre is a great place to start. The bursary will offer free fibre broadband and mobile bundles to eligible companies from October.
