Decide how you want to set up as a dance teacher<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a wide range of possible options when it comes to where and how you want to teach dance. For example, you could get into teaching in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to teach at primary level, it&#8217;s possible to train as a primary school teacher and then specialise in physical education (PE). This would then allow you to teach dance or creative movement, depending on the school you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At secondary level, you have the option to teach dance as a subject in its own right. Alternatively, you could combine your expertise with PE, drama or performing arts teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To lecture at a university would require you to have plenty of teaching experience and a postgraduate qualification, unless you already have a recognised profile as a professional performer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If self-employment is your preferred setup, you could look into dance teacher qualifications that include teacher training. Getting qualified while you work at a dance school is also an option. Meet the entry requirements for your dance teacher training course<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Universities will generally require you to have the following qualifications before they accept you onto a dance education degree programme:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">3 A levels or equivalent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be prepared to attend an audition or interview too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don\u2019t have the required secondary school grades, you could look into sitting them at a further education college. Alternatively, some higher education establishments may take your extensive experience into account when deciding whether or not to award you a place on their course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For college courses, the entry requirements are usually 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) for a level 3 course. You\u2019ll need to make sure your course or courses qualify you in both dance and teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4getyourdanceteacherqualifications\">4. Get your dance teacher qualifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on your plans, there are a few possible routes you can take to launch your career as a dance teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"furtherandhighereducationcourses\">Further and higher education courses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A range of universities and other higher and further education institutes offer dance teacher training in the UK. For example, the Royal Academy of Dance offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalacademyofdance.org\/programme\/ba-hons-in-dance-education\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">BA (Hons) Dance Education (BADE)<\/a> and the University of Central Lancashire offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclan.ac.uk\/courses\/ba_hons_dance_performance_teaching.php\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dance Performance and Teaching BA (Hons)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wide range of colleges and dance institutions up and down the UK offer dance teacher training, not least The Royal Ballet School, which offers its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalballetschool.org.uk\/train\/dancer-training\/dance-teacher-training\/diploma-of-dance-teaching\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Diploma of Dance Teaching<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"onthejobtraining\">On-the-job training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also possible to become a dance teacher while you work. This route requires you to have plenty of practical experience. Get DBS checked<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going into teaching as a profession means you\u2019re likely to come into contact with vulnerable groups, such as children, through your work. This means you\u2019ll need Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your training provider or employer will be able to help you get this. Join a professional dance teachers association<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To give your potential students confidence in your credibility as a dance teacher, it\u2019s worthwhile joining a professional dance teachers\u2019 association. This can also be a great way to connect with other teachers and keep up with what\u2019s happening in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides being a professional body, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idta.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA)<\/a> also provides support and guidance if you\u2019re just starting out on your journey to becoming a dance teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could also look into becoming a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natd.org.uk\/homepage\/index.asp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Teachers of Dancing (NATD)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"settingupasaselfemployeddanceteacher\">Setting up as a self-employed dance teacher?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Setting up as a self-employed dance teacher means you\u2019ll need to consider some extra essential steps to take as you\u2019ll technically be starting your own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aregisterwithhmrc\">A.
