You could teach in schools on a freelance basis as a visiting tutor, or you could hold private lessons in your home or at the homes of your students. You could take group lessons or one-to-one lessons, and you may choose to teach adults or children.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ll end up doing a combination of different types of teaching. It\u2019s important that you have a good knowledge of the range of things your students may want to learn, including familiarity with the grade examination system.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"7stepstobecomingamusicteacher\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">7 steps to becoming a music teacher<\/h2>\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 id=\"1thinkthroughthebasicsofyourbusiness\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Think through the basics of your business<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Write a basic business plan and think through the mechanics of your business, like the hourly rates you\u2019ll charge. Most private music teachers charge between \u00a326 and \u00a336 an hour for one-to-one lessons according to a 2015 survey by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ism.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"2joinrelevantorganisations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Join relevant organisations<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Becoming a member of the ISM and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musiciansunion.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Musicians\u2019 Union<\/a> may be a good idea, as they can provide advice, tools and networking and listing opportunities. The Musicians\u2019 Union has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musiciansunion.org.uk\/Home\/Advice\/Education\/Contracts\/What-Contract-should-I-use\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bank of teaching contract templates<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"3registerasselfemployed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Register as self-employed<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simplest business structure is sole trader. To set up as a sole trader, all you need to do is <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-structure\/register-as-self-employed\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1501\" >tell HMRC you\u2019re self-employed<\/a>. Bear in mind that you need to do this even if you\u2019re only teaching music part-time and you have another source of income.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternatively, you may decide to set up a limited company. If you get work in an organisation like a school, they will usually check your criminal record by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/disclosure-barring-service-check\/overview\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">requesting a DBS check<\/a>. In other situations &#8211; for example if you\u2019re just teaching at home or at your students\u2019 homes &#8211; you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mygov.scot\/basic-disclosure\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">request a basic disclosure<\/a> yourself that you can show to clients. If you\u2019re a member of the ISM, you may be able to use their DBS service.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"5sortyourinsurance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Sort your insurance<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"\/business-insurance\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"5152\" >Business insurance<\/a> is an important consideration for self-employed music teachers. <a href=\"\/business-insurance\/public-liability-insurance\/\">Public liability insurance<\/a> is the cover that can help you out if someone sues you for injury or damage. For example if a student visited your studio for a music lesson and slipped over on a wet floor, or if you went to a student\u2019s home and accidentally spilt coffee on a computer, you could face a compensation claim, and your public liability insurance could step in to cover the legal fees and compensation costs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are other covers to consider too, including <a href=\"\/business-insurance\/professional-indemnity-insurance\/\">professional indemnity insurance<\/a> and <a href=\"\/business-insurance\/business-equipment-insurance\/\">business equipment cover<\/a>.
