Properties that don\u2019t replace RTS meters could risk higher bills or a loss of heat and hot water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-azure-200-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-30c80bf8 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-radius:35px;margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-replacing-rts-meters-at-a-glance\"><strong>Replacing RTS meters \u2013 at a glance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">the phased switch-off of RTS meters started on 30 June 2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">property owners with RTS meters need to replace them to avoid higher energy bills or service issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">as of 30 May 2025, over 300,000 meters still needed replacing (over 100,000 of which were in Scotland)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">owners with RTS meters will be contacted by their energy supplier to organise an upgrade<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">most RTS meters will be replaced by smart meters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-rts-meter-and-does-my-property-have-one\">What is an RTS meter and does my property have one?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RTS meters are a price effective energy option, offering cheaper electricity rates during off-peak hours through tariffs like Economy 7 and Economy 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They work by communicating with energy suppliers through a BBC longwave radio channel, and automatically adjust the rates you pay during specific hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re mostly found in premises that rely on electricity for heating and hot water. Your switchbox may have a Radio Teleswitch label attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result of the phased switch-off, without the longwave signal your meter won\u2019t know at which time the prices are at their lowest to \u2018charge up\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Losing the signal also means properties could risk losing heating \u2013 or having it stuck on permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do landlords need to do next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your property uses an RTS meter, you need to upgrade your meter as soon as possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The switching off of RTS meters means that if you\u2019ve yet to replace your meter, you could face higher energy bills for your property, or worse, have no access to hot water or heating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This would be a breach of the The Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, which clarifies a tenant\u2019s right to heating and hot water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don\u2019t know if your tenants have been contacted about upgrading your meter, you or your tenant should reach out to the property\u2019s energy supplier to arrange a replacement meter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independent regulator Ofgem suggests fitting a smart meter as a replacement for RTS meters. Charlotte Friel, Director for Retail Pricing and Systems at Ofgem, said: \u201c[It] will open up a wider range of tariffs and options that could give [customers] more control over their bills and more visibility of their energy use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-government-steps-in-to-introduce-phased-switch-off\">Government steps in to introduce phased switch-off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, a mass switch-off of RTS meters was due to take place on 30 June 2025. However, it\u2019s now a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-steps-in-to-protect-consumers-with-old-energy-meters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">phased switch-off<\/a>, which started at the end of June.
