These rules apply whether you\u2019re set up as a private seller or a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How much can I sell on eBay without paying tax?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re only selling your own items at the same price (or less) than what you originally paid for them, you won\u2019t have to pay any tax. However, if you\u2019re selling items you bought with the intention of reselling, you\u2019ll be considered a trader, and will need to pay tax.<br><br>HMRC sets a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/tax-free-allowances-on-property-and-trading-income\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a31,000 tax-free trading allowance<\/a><\/strong>, meaning you won\u2019t need to pay tax if you earn less than this amount. If you\u2019re set up as a private seller, it\u2019s now free to sell on eBay. The only exceptions are if you sell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">cars, motorcycles, and vehicles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">more than 300 items a month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also optional upgrades which cost you, such as setting a reserve price for an item or promoting your listings. But the lack of selling fees makes eBay a great choice for online shops just starting out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember that if you choose to open an eBay shop as a business seller, you\u2019ll need to pay the monthly fees listed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">eBay buyer protection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">eBay does, however, add fees for the seller in the form of buyer protection. The fee will be 75p, plus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">4 per cent of the item price (for items up to \u00a3300)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">2 per cent of the item price (for items between \u00a3300 and \u00a34,000)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will cover any administrative costs related to disputes over issues such as incorrectly described items or items that have been damaged or lost in transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eBay buyer protection fee will always be included in the item price upfront \u2013 so your buyers will never see a surprise price increase when checking out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, eBay buyer protection will only affect you if you\u2019re a private seller. If you\u2019re an eBay business seller, eBay buyer protection will be included for free for both you and your buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ebay-scams\">Is eBay safe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">eBay is an established platform with 133 million active users worldwide. You can take payments securely using services like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/retail\/online-payment-methods-for-business\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1490\">PayPal<\/a> and have access to the platform\u2019s seller protection services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buyers and sellers are also rated on a feedback system, which helps to build trust and identify potentially problematic users on both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, much like any ecommerce platform, it\u2019s not completely free of scams.
