Small businesses are the beating heart of the UK economy. If our SMEs can\u2019t grow, then neither can the economy.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost half (49%) of all small business owners in the UK are set to increase their prices as they look to battle rising costs, a new report reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SME Insights Report, released by Simply Business, one of the UK\u2019s biggest small business insurance providers, saw over 1,000 small business owners from across the UK surveyed. It lays bare the truth of how SMEs are responding to the current economic climate \u2013 navigating an uphill challenge of rising costs, staggering levels of inflation and post-Covid-19 financial recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study found that small business owners are being forced to implement price increases, slow down plans for expansion and even stop any plans for new hires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet despite all this, 71% say that they feel optimistic about their business\u2019s prospects over the next six months. In the face of adversity, confidence levels among SME owners remains high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-small-business-owners-put-survival-tactics-in-place\">Small business owners put survival tactics in place<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many SMEs are having to employ a number of survival tactics to make it through the next six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With half (49%) of all small business owners set to increase their prices, one in five (21%) intend to raise prices by 6-10%. For almost one in 10 owners (7%), these increases could be by as much as 20%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two in five (40%) are holding off expanding or opening new premises in the next six months, and just under half (48%) are unlikely to hire any additional employees in the next six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expansion plans are also set to be placed on hold. Half (48%) say they\u2019re unlikely to hire any additional employees, while two in five (40%) hold off on opening new or additional premises due to the current economic climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One in five (20%) say they\u2019re even unlikely to purchase any new equipment or tools, as owners look to reduce spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sme-confidence-is-on-the-rise-despite-economic-outlook\">SME confidence is on the rise, despite economic outlook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three in five (62%) owners believe that the economy is set to worsen over the next six months, but despite this, remain confident in their business\u2019 ability to weather the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This level of confidence is a stark contrast to levels reported during the pandemic, when in September 2020, one in five (17%) predicted that their business wouldn\u2019t survive another lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost two years on, a third (34%) now say they\u2019re more confident about their business\u2019 prospects than 6-12 months ago, with 71% very confident about their business prospects in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commenting on this new research,&nbsp;<strong>Jonathan Portes, Professor of Economics and Public Policy at King&#8217;s College London said:<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>\u201cSmall businesses in the UK have had to cope with overlapping economic shocks over the past three years \u2013 the pandemic, Brexit, and now the cost of living crisis.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhat this study shows is that despite the general economic pessimism, most businesses remain resilient. Like consumers, they expect the UK economy to worsen significantly over the next year, but they remain reasonably confident about their own prospects in the face of rising cost pressures.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cUK businesses might remain resilient in the face of further economic turmoil, but they need and deserve a more coherent longer-term strategy for the UK economy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alan Thomas, UK CEO at Simply Business comments:<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>\u201cThe temperature of the nation\u2019s self-employed is absolutely clear in our latest research. For 70 per cent, rising costs \u2013 as many still battle the lasting effects of the pandemic \u2013 represent the single biggest risk to recovery.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThis has left many owners with little choice but to put survival tactics in place. Half of all small business owners plan to increase their prices this year, while 48 per cent are halting new hires and two in five are putting expansion plans on hold. Yet it\u2019s encouraging to see that SME confidence is improving as we emerge from the pandemic.
