{"id":203,"date":"2023-05-15T14:42:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-15T14:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/about-us\/press-releases\/mind-your-business-launch\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T11:18:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T11:18:21","slug":"mind-your-business-launch","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/about-us\/press-releases\/mind-your-business-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"Over half of small business owners have experienced poor mental health over the past 12 months"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-no-margin hero-bg has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"background:linear-gradient(180deg,rgb(255,255,255) 0%,rgb(243,243,243) 100%);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--150);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--150);background-image:url(&apos;https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/simply-business-uk\/assets\/images\/faq-bg.png&apos;);background-size:cover;\">\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-azure-700-color has-text-color has-link-color has-max-huge-font-size wp-elements-8e5b1001307c3ef74d8e00c094cb122a\">Over half of small business owners have experienced poor mental health over the past 12 months<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long hours, fleeting holidays and less than 5 hours of sleep a night: the mental health of the UK&#8217;s self-employed is in jeopard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Over half (56%) of small business owners have experienced poor mental health over the past 12 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Many report struggling with sleep, with a third surviving on less than 5 hours sleep a night on average<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">One in three SME owners work over 46 hours per week \u2013 10 hours more than the average working hours clocked up in the UK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Three quarters (73%) take fewer than 20 days of annual leave per year &#8211; significantly less than the national entitlement of 28 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Anxiety (59%), depression (38%) and loneliness (22%) all reported as major issues for small business owners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">In the midst of a cost of living crisis, 41% say \u2018financial worries\u2019 are having the single biggest impact on their mental health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Simply Business has partnered with Mental Health at Work, a programme curated by leading mental health charity Mind, and has donated \u00a3100,000 to support the mental health of the UK\u2019s self-employed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stress, anxiety and depression are crippling small business owners across the country, as new research by Simply Business, one of the UK\u2019s biggest providers of small business insurance, uncovers the full extent of the mental health challenges facing the UK\u2019s self-employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the UK recognises Mental Health Awareness Week, half of SME owners say they have experienced poor mental health over the past 12 months \u2013 a 124% increase compared with the national average*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as the UK grapples with a cost of living crisis, record inflation and rising prices, four in ten (41%) self-employed people admit \u2018financial worries\u2019 are having the single biggest impact on their mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS AT BREAKING POINT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside acute financial worries, it\u2019s clear that long hours and a lack of rest are taking their toll on the country\u2019s SME owners. Almost one in six (15%) believe a lack of time off is directly impacting their mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one in three (33%) open up about experiencing burnout, the research reveals that small business owners are working over 46 hours a week on average \u2013 10 hours more than the average working hours clocked up by workers in the UK (36.4 hours according to ONS data).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, three quarters (73%) take fewer than 20 days off each year \u2013 well below the UK statutory annual leave entitlement of 28 days. Throw lack of sleep into the mix \u2013 44% report struggling with sleep, and a third survive on less than 5 hours a night \u2013 and it\u2019s clear that many are at breaking point. CASE STUDY: Serena Fordham, Founder of community interest company ProspHER shared the complexity of running a small business and the toll it can take on one&#8217;s mental health: \u201cBeing self-employed does require an ability to work without barriers or parameters. As a result, the quality of your personal life is directly linked to the success of your business, and the wellbeing of your employees and customers feels fully on your shoulders. Though you might have the passion, an extraordinary amount of effort is required to get things off the ground and keep things going, which can really take its toll.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ANXIETY, DEPRESSION AND LONELINESS PLAGUING THE SELF-EMPLOYED<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worryingly, 80% of small business owners have suffered with poor mental health at some stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three in five (59%) have experienced anxiety (59%), while depression (38%) and feelings of loneliness (22%) are also common for small business owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite mounting challenges, more than half (51%) of all SME owners say they wouldn\u2019t feel comfortable disclosing poor mental health as a reason for absence or delaying deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost a third (40%) say they don&#8217;t tend to take time off even when experiencing poor mental health, despite acknowledging the benefit it would have for them and their business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SMALL BUSINESSES DESPERATE FOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked, a staggering nine in 10 (90%) said that they believe the government is not currently doing enough to support the mental health of the self-employed., with small business owners unable to claim the same rights as employees when it comes to statutory sick pay and holiday entitlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is an ambition amongst the community to make inroads. A third (35%) want to learn how to improve their mental health while running a business but don\u2019t feel they have access to the correct resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply Business has partnered with Mental Health at Work, a programme curated by leading mental health charity Mind, and has donated \u00a3100,000 to support the mental health of the UK\u2019s self-employed.
