But when you drive a business vehicle without insurance, not only are you breaking the law \u2013 you&#8217;re putting your business at risk too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are the consequences of driving without insurance and how could they affect your business? And what if you have multiple employees using the same company vehicle? Read on to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-penalty-for-driving-without-insurance\">What is the penalty for driving without insurance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it\u2019s a legal requirement to have at least third party vehicle insurance under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1988\/52\/contents\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Road Traffic Act<\/a>, driving without it can have significant consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re caught driving without insurance, you\u2019ll be fined \u00a3300 and get six points on your licence. But if the offence goes to court, there could be additional penalties such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">an unlimited fine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">disqualification from driving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">your vehicle being seized or destroyed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you\u2019re convicted of driving without insurance, an IN10 endorsement (conviction code for driving without insurance) stays on your driving licence for four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because you need to tell insurers about this conviction, you&#8217;ll likely pay much higher insurance premiums for the five year period after your conviction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, you may struggle to even get an insurance policy because you&#8217;ll be seen as high risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you fail to tell an insurer about a driving conviction you&#8217;ve received within  the last five years, your insurance will be cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-driving-without-insurance-a-criminal-offence\">Is driving without insurance a criminal offence?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, it is. Insurance is there to cover you and other road users\u2019 costs if there\u2019s an accident or damage caused by fire and theft. The minimum level of insurance required to drive is third party insurance to cover the costs of others in an accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comprehensive cover is more commonly used for business vehicles, as it also covers your own costs following an accident, as well as others. It also covers your losses from fire and theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s important to understand that even if you\u2019re not driving your vehicle, it still needs insurance unless you\u2019ve registered it as \u2018Statutory Off Road Notification\u2019 (SORN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to register your vehicle as SORN if you no longer need to drive (or park) on a public road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can be fined \u00a3100 if you\u2019re the registered owner of an uninsured vehicle that\u2019s not been declared as SORN. But it isn\u2019t just a fine, you can potentially:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">have your vehicle impounded or the wheels clamped <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">be taken to court and get a maximum fine of \u00a31,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-if-someone-else-drives-my-van\">What if someone else drives my van? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s common for more than one person to drive a work van, but making sure you have the right cover is important. Just because you\u2019ve insured your van, it doesn\u2019t mean anyone can drive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with comprehensive cover, usually only people who are named drivers on the policy should drive the vehicle. And It\u2019s important for you to make sure only named drivers use your vehicle because if they\u2019re not and there\u2019s an accident, your vehicle may not be covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your employees may think they&#8217;re covered to drive your vehicle because they&#8217;re insured to drive other cars (DOC) on their own insurance policy. But the truth is that this isn&#8217;t enough to cover them or your vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DOC cover is less commonly offered by insurers these days. When it is, it\u2019s meant for emergency use and only offers third party cover. So if someone is driving your vehicle with DOC cover, your vehicle won&#8217;t be covered if they have an accident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van insurance policies cover the vehicle and those who are named drivers. If somebody is going to be driving your van, they need to be added as a named driver on the policy. If it\u2019s for a short time period, you can usually add them temporarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happens-if-you-re-hit-by-someone-without-insurance\">What happens if you\u2019re hit by someone without insurance?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have fully comprehensive cover on your vehicle and you\u2019re hit by an uninsured driver, your policy should cover you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you only have third party cover and the accident is their fault, you won\u2019t be able to claim on their insurance to cover your costs like you normally would. You\u2019ll need to contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mib.org.uk\/making-a-claim\/claiming-against-an-uninsured-driver\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Motor Insurance Bureau<\/a>, who\u2019ll try to compensate you for your losses.
