You could receive government funding for hiring an apprentice, doing valuable industry research, or taking steps to be more sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s an overview of the small business grants available from the government:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovate UK<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovate UK provides government grants to \u201cdevelop and realise the potential of new ideas, including those from the UK\u2019s world-class research base\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/councils\/innovate-uk\/guidance-for-applicants\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Read about the Innovate UK grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">R&amp;D tax reliefs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research and Development (R&amp;D) tax reliefs support companies seeking to research or develop an advancement in their field (even if the project is unsuccessful). This means you can reduce your tax bill by claiming relief on things related to the research project, including staff wages, and project materials, and utilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government merged its R&amp;D tax relief schemes in April 2024, but if you&#8217;re a loss-making small business, you can still get enhanced support through the Enhanced R&amp;D Intensive Support (ERIS) scheme. You can claim this specific SME relief if you have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">fewer than 500 staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">a <a data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1577\" href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/what-is-business-turnover\/\">turnover<\/a> of less than \u20ac100m or a <a data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1105\" href=\"\/knowledge\/income\/balance-sheet-template\/\">balance sheet<\/a> total less than \u20ac86m<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grants for unemployed entrepreneurs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although there\u2019s no grant available, if you claim Universal Credit (UC) you may be eligible for a 12-month start-up period. This just means that your UC payments will be based on your self-employed earnings and you don\u2019t need to look for other work. Our overview of <a href=\"\/knowledge\/allowances\/benefits-and-self-employed-minimum-income-floor\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1331\">self-employed benefits<\/a> explains more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll also get support from a specialist work coach who\u2019s experienced in working with self-employed people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option to consider is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-start-up-loan\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Start Up Loan<\/a>, which could be useful if your business is less than two years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has more information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/moving-from-benefits-to-work\/starting-your-own-business\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">moving from benefits to work<\/a> and starting your own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grants for taking on an apprentice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can get financial help from the government to <a data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1544\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/staff\/taking-on-an-apprentice-as-a-small-business-owner\/\">train an apprentice<\/a> in your small business. The government is currently transitioning from the Apprenticeship Levy to the new Growth and Skills Levy. As part of this, shorter &#8216;apprenticeship units&#8217; will launch in April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your annual pay bill is less than \u00a33 million (meaning you&#8217;re not a levy-payer):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>current rule:<\/strong> you generally don&#8217;t pay the apprenticeship levy. The government currently pays 95% towards the cost of training and assessment, and you pay a 5% co-investment fee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>new rule (for under 25s):<\/strong> following the Autumn Budget 2025, the government announced it will fully fund (100%) the training fees for SMEs hiring apprentices under the age of 25. This removes the 5% co-investment fee for this group. The government expects this 100% funding to start from the next academic year (2026\/27)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use the government\u2019s enquiry form to ask the <a href=\"https:\/\/contact.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk\/employer-enquiry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">National Apprenticeship Service<\/a> about the funding available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grants for installing high-speed broadband<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses in rural areas may be eligible for vouchers towards the cost of installing new gigabit-capable connections. Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/gigabit-broadband-voucher-scheme-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme<\/a>, vouchers are worth up to \u00a34,500 for eligible businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Air quality grant schemes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has made funding available to some local authorities in England that are introducing clean air zones. Make sure you keep up to date with the <a href=\"\/knowledge\/vehicles\/ultra-low-emission-zone-business-guide\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1554\">new low emissions zones in UK cities<\/a>. And you may be eligible for a grant to support your business with upgrading your vehicles or paying for the new charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find out more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/air-quality-grant-programme\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">air quality grant scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grants for low-emission vehicles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you drive a van for your business, you can receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/plug-in-vehicle-grants\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">government grant when you buy a low-emission vehicle<\/a>. The government recently extended the plug-in van and truck grant to at least 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t have to apply for the grant, but you\u2019ll get a discount when you buy the van. This discount gives you up to \u00a32,500 off small vans and up to \u00a35,000 off large vans. There are also vouchers available for installing an electric vehicle charge point at a workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read our <a href=\"\/knowledge\/vehicles\/electric-cars-and-vans-for-business\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1211\">guide on electric cars and vans<\/a> for business for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Government funding for the arts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Arts Council England has a number of grants and funds for creative businesses and organisations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artscouncil.org.uk\/our-open-funds\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Find out more on their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grants-for-upgrading-your-boiler\">Grants for upgrading your boiler<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-boiler-upgrade-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">boiler upgrade scheme<\/a>, you might be able to get up to \u00a37,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump if you live in England or Wales.
