So what do you do if you get a letter in the post calling you up for jury service? Will you have to take valuable time off to attend the criminal courts? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it may sound exciting to some as a window into the justice system, for others a jury summons might spark panic about how you\u2019ll manage your business and finances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re self-employed, what are your legal responsibilities? And how can you keep your business running while you\u2019re on jury duty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-jury-service\">What is jury service? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every jury is randomly selected out of people in the community \u2013 it\u2019s based on the electoral register. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A jury summons is issued in the post with a specific date you\u2019re needed and which court (usually your nearest court). Make sure you respond within seven days of receiving your jury summons \u2013 if you don\u2019t do this you could be liable for a \u00a31,000 fine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you arrive in court you\u2019ll need to wait to be selected for a trial, which can take a few hours or even a couple of days. Sometimes you\u2019ll be sent home while you wait to be selected, but you\u2019ll need to continue being \u2018on call\u2019 during your jury service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A jury is made up of 12 people (15 in Scotland) and it\u2019s their job to hear evidence and then decide together whether a defendant is guilty or not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s against the law not to attend jury service, unless you have a valid reason (we\u2019ll go into this below). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-you-get-paid-for-jury-duty\">Do you get paid for jury duty?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t get paid for jury service but you can claim back money towards loss of earnings as well as travel and food expenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can claim back up to \u00a364.95 a day for loss of earnings during the first 10 days of jury service (it increases to \u00a3129.91 if you\u2019re involved in a longer trial). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other jury service expenses you can claim include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\u00a35.71 a day for food and drink<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">the cost of travelling to the court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">parking expenses (depending on the court)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">childcare or carer costs (if this isn\u2019t something you\u2019d normally pay for)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/reply-jury-summons.service.gov.uk\/expense-calculator\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">expenses calculator<\/a> can help you estimate how much jury service pay you can claim back. Read the detailed list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/jury-service\/what-you-can-claim-if-youre-self-employed\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">expenses you can claim in England and Wales<\/a> on the government website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotcourts.gov.uk\/home\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/information-and-services\/going-court\/jury-service\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Ireland government website<\/a> for specific information as expenses can vary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jury-service-pay-filling-in-your-jury-service-loss-of-earnings-form\">Jury service pay \u2013 filling in your jury service loss of earnings form<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll need to claim your expenses after you\u2019ve finished your jury service by submitting a loss of earnings form. The form you need depends on where in the UK you live:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>England and Wales<\/strong> \u2013 the form you need is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/form-certificate-of-loss-of-earnings-for-self-employed-or-company-directors\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">loss of earnings form<\/a> for self-employed people and company directors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Northern Ireland <\/strong>\u2013 you\u2019ll receive a claim form with your jury summons and must send it no later than 14 days after you\u2019ve finished your service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scotland<\/strong> \u2013 collect the form from the court on your first day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll need to show the court <strong>proof of your expected income<\/strong> \u2013 for example your most recent tax return. This can also be a letter from your accountant confirming your gross daily earnings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payments are usually processed seven to 10 days after you\u2019ve sent your claim form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-azure-300-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-69910985 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-radius:10px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-often-can-you-be-called-for-jury-service\">How often can you be called for jury service?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no limit to how many times you can be called for jury service. People are randomly selected from the electoral register, so some people may never be selected while others could feasibly be chosen more than once. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re between the ages of 18 and 76 then you can be called at any time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jury-service-exemptions\">Jury service exemptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only in exceptional cases can people be exempt from jury service completely. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">over 70 year olds (76 year olds and older won\u2019t be called up at all)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">those with a serious disability or illness preventing them from doing jury service <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">full time carers <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">new parents who are unable to serve at all in the next 12 months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also exemptions if you don\u2019t understand English or if you\u2019ve got certain previous convictions or a pending criminal case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-you-have-to-do-jury-service\">Do you have to do jury service?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may be times when taking time out of your life to attend court just isn\u2019t possible for you. Fortunately, you can request to defer your jury service for another date in the next 12 months if you have a good reason. For example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you\u2019re a new parent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you\u2019re having an operation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you have a holiday booked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you\u2019re sitting an exam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you\u2019ve served on a jury within the last two years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-does-jury-service-last\">How long does jury service last?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jury service usually in the UK lasts 10 days. However, in Northern Ireland a jury panel is in place for around four weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A trial can last days, weeks, or even months, so some juries will be needed for longer than 10 days. You\u2019ll be informed in advance if this is likely to happen though. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might sit on more than one trial during your jury service \u2013 some can be over in a few days while complex cases can last weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court usually runs from 10am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, but times can vary depending on your trial and court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-azure-200-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-30c80bf8 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-radius:35px;margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keeping-your-business-going-while-you-re-doing-jury-service\">Keeping your business going while you\u2019re doing jury service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much your business is impacted by you going away on jury duty will depend on the type of work you do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you\u2019re a <a href=\"\/business-insurance\/copywriter-insurance\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"549\" >self-employed copywriter<\/a> then you may be able to work on projects during the evenings and weekends.
