(and other legal considerations)<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legally you don\u2019t have to have a criminal record check to be a private tutor, but if you\u2019re going to be working with children or vulnerable adults then this is advisable. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, if you\u2019re working for an agency or other regulated body then they will require you to have one of these checks. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are different checks depending on where in the UK you\u2019re working:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">tutors in England and Wales will need to apply for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/disclosure-and-barring-service\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Disclosure and Barring Service<\/a> (DBS) check<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">for Northern Ireland you should apply through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/campaigns\/accessni-criminal-record-checks\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">AccessNI <\/a><\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">and in Scotland you&#8217;ll need the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mygov.scot\/pvg-scheme\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme<\/a> (PVG) <\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your tutoring business grows and you start to employ people, there\u2019s specific legislation you\u2019ll need to be aware of. This includes rules on pay, annual leave, employment contracts, and insurance. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Set up your business<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you\u2019re just teaching a few times a week it\u2019s important to get your business set up correctly. But when you\u2019re likely to hit that point (which won\u2019t take long if you\u2019re teaching regularly), you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-structure\/register-as-self-employed\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1501\" >register with HMRC<\/a> and start paying tax. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/self-employed-tax-changes\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1514\" >file your Self Assessment tax return<\/a> every year by 31 January.
