{"id":1380,"date":"2025-09-24T15:43:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T15:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/funding\/energy-bill-support-for-small-businesses\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T15:46:42","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T15:46:42","slug":"energy-bill-support-for-small-businesses","status":"publish","type":"knowledge","link":"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/cash-flow\/energy-bill-support-for-small-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Standing charge changes \u2013 could this lower business energy bills?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Energy suppliers are set to offer lower standing charge tariffs, according to plans from the UK\u2019s energy regulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ofgem has confirmed a requirement for new lower tariffs to be offered to energy customers in England, Scotland, and Wales by January 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the plans, energy companies will have to offer at least one tariff with lower standing charges, giving businesses and consumers more choice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-will-new-tariffs-bring-energy-bills-down-nbsp\">Will new tariffs bring energy bills down?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consumers are being urged to treat the news with caution as the costs are likely to be moved around rather than removed completely. Ofgem explained that tariffs with a lower standing charge will have a higher unit rate, so bills are unlikely to see reduced costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best option will depend on your business and your actual energy consumption. If you compare energy tariffs total costs (the unit rates and standing charges combined) with how much energy you use, you&#8217;ll be able to work out the cheapest option for your business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-azure-200-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-30c80bf8 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-radius:35px;margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--90)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-standing-charges\">What are standing charges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standing charges are set by individual energy suppliers and cover the cost of moving energy (gas and electricity) into people\u2019s homes and businesses. The charges also cover the cost of maintenance and business costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-will-the-new-tariffs-be-introduced\">When will the new tariffs be introduced?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ofgem has set a timeline of the end of January 2026 for the introduction of new standing charge tariffs, however firm plans are likely to be confirmed in the government\u2019s Autumn Budget announcement in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-about-the-energy-price-cap\">What about the energy price cap?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 1 October 2025 to 31 December 2025, the energy price cap has increased by two per cent to \u00a31,755 a year for a typical household who use electricity and gas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The energy price cap in the UK specifically applies to domestic energy customers, not businesses. But that doesn&#8217;t mean businesses aren\u2019t affected by energy market fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The domestic energy price cap, set by Ofgem, regulates the maximum amount suppliers can charge households for each unit of energy. Businesses operate in a deregulated energy market, meaning they negotiate contracts directly with suppliers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there can be an indirect impact:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>higher wholesale prices \u2013<\/strong> the domestic price cap reflects trends in wholesale energy prices. You\u2019ll need to find other ways to make savings on their energy bills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-i-fix-my-energy-deal\"><strong>Should I fix my energy deal?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can sometimes make savings by fixing your energy deal with a supplier. This means you\u2019ll agree to pay a certain rate for the period of the contract. However you\u2019ll only be able to do this if your existing contract is coming to an end, or you\u2019re not tied into a contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>contact your energy supplier<\/strong> \u2013 ask your supplier if they can offer you a better deal <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>use comparison websites<\/strong> \u2013 research suppliers and rates for a new business energy tariff <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>check when your contract ends<\/strong> \u2013 look at how much notice you need to give your supplier if you want to switch <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-improve-energy-efficiency\"><strong>Improve energy efficiency <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may be things you can do to make your business more energy efficient. These don\u2019t all have to be expensive changes, and you could look into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/find-funding-to-help-your-business-become-greener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">funding to help your business become greener<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, you could replace lights with LED bulbs or install sensors that dim lights in bright spaces. And make sure you turn off any lights and machinery you\u2019re able to at the end of each day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understand-your-energy-usage\"><strong>Understand your energy usage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you haven\u2019t already, consider installing a smart meter for your business. This can help you understand how you\u2019re using your energy, and avoid paying estimated bills. This means you\u2019ll only pay for what you actually use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth noting too, energy suppliers can\u2019t charge you for energy used more than 12 months ago if you\u2019re a \u2018microbusiness\u2019. Ofgem has more information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofgem.gov.uk\/check-energy-back-billing-rules\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">back-billing rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-if-i-can-t-pay-my-business-energy-bill\">What if I can\u2019t pay my business energy bill?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best thing to do if you\u2019re worried about paying your energy bill is to contact your supplier to arrange an energy payment plan. They may be able to help by giving you more time to pay or offering you a break or reduction in payments. You may also be able to ask for access to hardship funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens Advice has a consumer helpline you can call if you\u2019re in debt or if you\u2019ve got a bill you can\u2019t afford and your supplier hasn\u2019t offered you a payment plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t let financial problems build up or ignore them. The Business Debtline is a charity that can provide free debt advice to small businesses in England, Wales, and Scotland. The cost of living crisis is impacting consumer spending (they have higher energy bills too) and suppliers are increasing their prices.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: &#8220;I think there will be fewer businesses looking to start up and some may not survive if the government cannot continue to support or bring it down further.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Micky also told us that the economic environment means he needs to &#8220;make some sacrifices&#8221;. This is only possible if you use 50 per cent or more of your energy to run your business at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However home-based businesses won\u2019t pay more than the energy price cap set by Ofgem (more on this below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"How-to-support-your-employees\">How to support your employees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you employ people in your business then looking after their wellbeing at work is going to be top of mind, particularly while navigating times of financial uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/staff\/what-is-a-salary-advance-scheme\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1224\">salary advance<\/a> can be helpful as an infrequent way to give staff access to their salary early, but shouldn\u2019t be relied on as a bridge between paycheques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bottom line is to make sure you\u2019re paying your staff fairly for the work they\u2019re doing. Offering rewards or local discounts, however small, can also help your people save money and feel valued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CIPD has a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/knowledge\/culture\/well-being\/cost-living-crisis\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">resources to help employers support employees<\/a> struggling with the cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, always signpost your staff to resources such as Citizens Advice or The Money Charity if you\u2019re worried they\u2019re getting into debt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"crisis-support\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-do-if-you-can-t-pay-staff-or-suppliers\">What to do if you can\u2019t pay staff or suppliers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your business\u2019s financial situation has reached a point where you\u2019re worried you won\u2019t be able to pay your staff or suppliers then you should get financial advice immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might be able to apply for the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessdebtline.org\/fact-sheet-library\/breathing-space-ew\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">breathing space scheme<\/a> if you&#8217;re in England or Wales (although this doesn\u2019t apply for limited companies). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve caught the situation early, consider if there are other things you can do in the short-term. Can you reduce costs in other areas to make sure you can cover staff wages and bills?
