There are also punishments, including bans and fines, for driving a vehicle without an MOT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read our guide to find out the consequences of driving without an MOT and the few circumstances where it is allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-mot-test\">What is an MOT test?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Ministry of Transport (MOT) test is an annual check up for vehicles that are more than three years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An MOT is designed to check things like the engine and braking systems to make sure a vehicle is road safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to complete an MOT test for your vehicle by either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">the third anniversary of its registration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">the anniversary of its last MOT, if it\u2019s over 3 years old<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read our <a href=\"\/knowledge\/vehicles\/mot-checklist-for-van-and-business-drivers\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1486\">MOT checklist<\/a> for more information on how the tests work and what you need to do to prepare your vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-you-drive-a-car-without-an-mot\">Can you drive a car without an MOT?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the vast majority of cases, the answer is no. However, there are two exceptions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">if you\u2019re driving to a garage or test centre for an MOT test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">if you\u2019re driving to a garage for minor repairs highlighted during a recent MOT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to book your MOT in good time and remember the date so you don\u2019t miss your test. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.check-mot.service.gov.uk\/?_ga=2.81251280.610234381.1696604243-44237633.1696604243\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">check on the government website<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-it-illegal-to-drive-without-an-mot\">Is it illegal to drive without an MOT?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as your MOT expires (from midnight on the date of expiry), it\u2019s illegal to drive the vehicle apart from in the exceptions mentioned above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to note that if you\u2019re driving to a garage without an MOT, you can\u2019t take detours to do other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re pulled over by the police, you\u2019ll need to be able to show evidence of your appointment at the garage and that you\u2019re taking the most direct route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-can-you-drive-without-an-mot\">How long can you drive without an MOT?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can&#8217;t drive without a valid MOT unless you&#8217;re driving directly to a pre-booked test or to get minor repairs done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your business vehicle fails its MOT with no major issues, you could drive it if your previous year\u2019s MOT is still valid. This would only happen if you booked your test a few weeks ahead of your existing MOT expiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-i-drive-my-car-without-an-mot-if-it-s-booked-in-for-a-test\">Can I drive my car without an MOT if it\u2019s booked in for a test?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can only drive your vehicle without an MOT if you\u2019re going to get it tested or repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the vehicle that you drive for work has failed an MOT test due to a dangerous defect, it\u2019s illegal to drive and shouldn\u2019t be allowed to leave the garage until it\u2019s been repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vehicles that are being driven without an MOT can be picked up by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, which could lead to their drivers being pulled over or visited at home by the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-penalty-for-no-mot\">What is the penalty for no MOT?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re found to be driving a business vehicle illegally with no MOT, you could be given a \u00a31,000 fine. If the vehicle has failed an MOT test due to a dangerous defect, you could also receive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">a \u00a32,500 fine if you\u2019re driving a car<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">an unlimited fine if you\u2019re driving a van<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of this, you could receive three points on your driving licence for driving a vehicle that has no MOT and has been classified as dangerous. Plus, if you\u2019ve previously been convicted of driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition in the previous three years, you could be banned for driving for a minimum of six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If driving a vehicle is an important part of your business, getting caught without a valid MOT could be damaging towards its smooth running as well as your reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-a-car-with-no-mot-be-parked-on-the-road\">Can a car with no MOT be parked on the road?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you\u2019re not planning to drive it, your business vehicle can\u2019t be parked on the road if it doesn\u2019t have a valid MOT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this scenario, you\u2019d need to park it somewhere private such as a driveway, garage, or paid storage location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-car-insurance-still-valid-without-an-mot\">Is car insurance still valid without an MOT?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your vehicle doesn\u2019t have a valid MOT, this could also invalidate your insurance. Most motor insurance policies are based on the vehicle being roadworthy.
