It also has cheaper monthly rent than many of the cities on our list, making it an attractive option for people taking the leap into self-employed life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when it comes to startup programmes and business support, Newcastle came second in our table thanks to a great range of support offered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastgrowthhub.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">North East Growth Hub<\/a> and an incubator network through <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.uk.barclays\/locations\/newcastle\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Barclays Eagle Labs<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"london\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-london\">2. But with that comes an average monthly rent of \u00a32,125, so the high cost of living could push many entrepreneurs to consider more affordable cities in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the cost, the UK capital also came third for quality of life thanks to better work opportunities and overall lifestyle. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"leicester\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-leicester\">3. Leicester<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our data shows a high average turnover for entrepreneurs in Leicester, as well as a 12 per cent growth in new businesses for 2023. And with average monthly rent for the region less than a third of what it costs to rent in London, it\u2019s a highly affordable city to live and work. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leicester also has programmes such as Barclays Eagle Labs and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leicesterstartups.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Leicester Startups<\/a> community, which offers a support network and funding for new businesses. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\" class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"coventry\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-coventry\">4. This balance between earning potential and cost of living could make it an attractive option for founding a new business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there\u2019s not much on offer when it comes to startup programmes, the city does have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doncaster-chamber.co.uk\/launchpad\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Launchpad<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/weareteamsy.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Startup South Yorkshire<\/a> to help businesses start and grow their ideas. \n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"manchester\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-manchester\">6. Manchester<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A city with historical architecture steeped in its industrial past, Manchester offers an exciting quality of life and plenty of things to do. And while average rent is at the higher end of the table, earnings are higher to match.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those thinking of starting a business can also benefit from plenty of startup programmes and incubators to get a new business off the ground. Opportunities to explore include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natwest.com\/business\/business-services\/entrepreneur-accelerator.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Natwest Entrepreneur Fintech Accelerator<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchesterdigital.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester Digital<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accelerateme.co\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">accelerateme<\/a>, but there\u2019s countless others if you start researching. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"norwich\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-norwich\">7. Norwich<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norwich came second on our list for business growth, with a 16 per cent rise in new customers based there in 2023 compared to 2022. But while the rent is low, the average turnover for 2023 isn\u2019t as high as other areas on our list.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a range of grants, funding, and business support for businesses based in Norwich and the surrounding region. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syncthecity.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sync the City<\/a> offers an Apprentice-style competition for startups, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/newanglia.co.uk\/grant\/small-grant-scheme\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">New Anglia Small Grant Scheme<\/a> is open to businesses in the area. Norfolk City Council has a full list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norfolk.gov.uk\/business\/grants-and-funding\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">funding and grants<\/a> available to startups to help with your research. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"birmingham\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-birmingham\">8. Birmingham <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birmingham is an affordable city to live in and ranks seventh in One Family\u2019s best cities to live and work table, making it an attractive choice for new entrepreneurs.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, Simply Business saw a nine per cent increase in new businesses started in the city in 2023, and an average turnover of \u00a379,029. Programmes to help you get your business going include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghamresearchpark.co.uk\/biohub\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">BioHub Birmingham<\/a> incubator and accelerator and the <a href=\"https:\/\/birmingham.tech\/scaleup-programme\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ScaleUp Programme<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"stoke-on-trent\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-stoke-on-trent\">9. Stoke-on-Trent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Staffordshire city of Stoke-on-Trent came third for business growth in our research. We saw a 14 per cent increase in new businesses between 2022 and 2023, so it could be a thriving location for your startup.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stoke-on-Trent has a range of grants, loans, and investment programmes for businesses too.
