Sole traders, freelancers, and small businesses alike may choose to do this for a number of reasons \u2013 and may even see tax benefits for doing so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here\u2019s what we\u2019ll cover: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><a href=\"#what-is-business-contract-hire\">What is business contract hire?<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><a href=\"#how-does-business-car-leasing-work\">How does business car leasing work?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><a href=\"#company-car-tax\">How does company car tax work \u2013 for you and any employees?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><a href=\"#company-car-vs-company-car-allowance\">Company car vs company car allowance<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-business-contract-hire\">What is business contract hire?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business contract hire is when you pay for a car for a specific period of time but will never own it. The agreement usually has a mileage cap and there are costly penalties for going over this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most leases are two to three years with monthly payments. When the lease comes to an end, you\u2019ll give the car back and have the option of taking out a new lease with the latest model. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our <a href=\"\/knowledge\/vehicles\/how-to-buy-a-van-self-employed\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1420\">guide to buying or leasing a van<\/a> we covered some of the benefits of leasing, and much of this is the same for business cars. Here\u2019s a reminder of some of the key points: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>reduce your tax bill<\/strong> \u2013 if you\u2019re <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/vat-registration-threshold-small-business-guide\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1556\">VAT registered<\/a> you can claim back 100 per cent of the VAT on the monthly payments if the vehicle&#8217;s used solely for the business. Self Assessment taxpayers can deduct <a href=\"\/knowledge\/self-assessment\/self-employed-expenses\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1511\">allowable expenses<\/a> from turnover to reduce their tax bill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>no large upfront cost to get driving <\/strong>\u2013 just pay monthly (after an initial deposit) and you\u2019ll be out on the road <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>avoid service and maintenance costs<\/strong> \u2013 these are often covered by your leasing company <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll usually have all road tax included in your lease too, with the option of also including breakdown cover and insurance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-choose-the-type-of-business-car-leasing-you-need\">Choose the type of business car leasing you need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are different types of leasing available depending on whether you want to eventually buy the vehicle or not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve already mentioned <strong>business contract hire<\/strong> (where you\u2019ll never own the vehicle), but it\u2019s also worth knowing about these options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>business contract purchase<\/strong> \u2013 buy a vehicle in monthly instalments (plus interest), with a final large \u2018balloon payment\u2019 at the end of the contract. This usually includes maintenance and other services in the agreement  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>finance lease <\/strong>\u2013 a more flexible way to rent a vehicle in instalments (plus interest) over an agreed time period, then the car will be sold to a third party at the end of the lease (or you may have the option to buy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>business lease purchase<\/strong> \u2013 this is a finance plan which gives you the option to buy the vehicle after a long-term lease (plus interest), but it doesn&#8217;t include maintenance costs <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And<strong> you don\u2019t pay interest on business contract hire<\/strong>, making it a more attractive option compared to buying a car on finance when interest rates are high.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-about-leasing-a-company-car-as-a-sole-trader\">What about leasing a company car as a sole trader? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A business car can be a useful asset for many self-employed and freelance professionals. For example, as a <a href=\"\/business-insurance\/fitness-instructor-insurance\/\">fitness instructor<\/a> you\u2019ll be travelling between clients and might need to carry equipment too. Or perhaps you\u2019re a <a href=\"\/business-insurance\/mobile-hairdresser-insurance\/\">mobile hairdresser<\/a> needing a vehicle to get from A to B? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buying a new car is costly if you go down the route of paying cash upfront. While it\u2019s possible to also buy a new car on finance, you might consider a business contract lease for your business for some of the reasons we\u2019ve mentioned above. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sole traders can qualify for a business car lease. This type of agreement is also suitable for VAT-registered companies, partnerships, and limited companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-business-car-leasing-work\">How does business car leasing work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few steps to leasing your business car: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>Provide company documents<\/strong> \u2013 share proof of your identity and company details like address, bank statements, and annual net income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>Business credit check<\/strong> \u2013 leasing companies will do a credit check on your business before you can take out an agreement <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>Pay a deposit<\/strong> \u2013 you\u2019ll usually pay a deposit to lease your car and this can be anything from just one month to several months upfront. Some companies offer a \u2018no deposit\u2019 option but this can mean higher monthly payments <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>Decide whether to include insurance in your lease<\/strong> \u2013 this can save time and hassle with everything rolled into your monthly costs. Read more about business van insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" id=\"company-car-tax\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-company-car-tax-work-for-you-and-any-employees\">How does company car tax work \u2013 for you and any employees?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you offer a company car for people who work for you (this can be a nice <a href=\"\/knowledge\/staff\/employee-benefits-guide\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1107\">perk for employees<\/a>) then you\u2019ll need to understand the tax implications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A company car for staff is a taxable benefit, known as a \u2018benefit in kind\u2019. This means your employee will need to pay tax on this <strong>if they use the company car for private use<\/strong> \u2013 this includes driving to work.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider too that company directors count as \u2018employees\u2019 in this instance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only this, as an employer, you\u2019ll need to report the company car benefit to HMRC every year using a <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/what-is-a-p11d-and-whats-changing\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1137\">P11D form<\/a>. You may have to pay <a href=\"\/knowledge\/self-assessment\/how-to-pay-national-insurance-when-self-employed\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1440\">National Insurance<\/a> on this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-is-company-car-tax\">How much is company car tax?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use HMRC\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/cccfcalculator.hmrc.gov.uk\/CCF0.aspx\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">company car tax calculator<\/a> to work out how much you (or your employees) might pay in benefit in kind if you\u2019re a company director. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-leasing-a-car-tax-deductible\">Is leasing a car tax deductible? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you pay tax through the <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/self-employed-tax-changes\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1514\">Self Assessment<\/a> process then you\u2019ll be able to claim back certain expenses. A company car counts as a tax-deductible expense, but you mustn\u2019t include 15 per cent of your costs if the vehicle\u2019s CO2 emissions are more than 50g\/km. This could make leasing a hybrid or electric vehicle a more attractive option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should also note that sole traders can use a flat rate to pay tax on mileage as part of HMRC\u2019s <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/simplified-expenses-working-from-home\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1521\">simplified expenses process<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-company-car-vs-company-car-allowance\">Company car vs company car allowance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offering your staff a company car allowance in their paycheque is an alternative to managing a fleet of company cars. This lets them choose and maintain their vehicle but they get a cash benefit in their salary for using it for work.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your employees can then use the money to buy or lease a car themselves, which is then theirs to use for both business and personal use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much company car allowance you pay your staff will depend on how many miles you expect them to drive for work, average car maintenance costs, and their job role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an employer, you\u2019ll need to pay National Insurance contributions on the car allowance. Your employee will pay tax on the company benefit as a benefit in kind (as with using a company car for personal use). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-things-to-think-about\">Other things to think about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Branding. <\/strong>You can usually use vehicle wrapping as a way to advertise on your company car (although check the terms of your lease first). This gives you the chance to change the way the vehicle looks, for example adding a logo, but can be easily removed when your lease is up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read up on <a href=\"\/knowledge\/marketing\/how-to-advertise-your-business\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1410\">marketing and advertising<\/a> for more ideas to boost your business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hybrid and electric vehicles. <\/strong>Vehicles with lower or zero emissions can reduce the benefit in kind tax on company cars, as it\u2019s based on CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can you keep up with monthly payments? <\/strong>You\u2019ll need to be confident that your cash flow is healthy and you can commit to paying for the car lease every month. Leasing may give you the peace of mind that you know the monthly costs and don\u2019t have to worry about maintenance and depreciation.
