The pros and cons of being a driving instructor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re considering a career as a driving instructor, it\u2019s important to understand what attracts people to the trade as well as some of the common challenges.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pros\">Pros<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">flexible working hours \u2013 you can set your own schedule and work around your personal commitments <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">job security \u2013 people will always need to learn how to drive so the job is relatively stable and secure, even during times of economic uncertainty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">rewarding \u2013 you get to help people achieve an important milestone in their lives. It can be satisfying to see your students progress and gain confidence behind the wheel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">be your own boss \u2013 you have control over how you teach, who you teach, and where you work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cons\">Cons<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">potentially stressful \u2013 you&#8217;ll be in the car with people who are just learning to drive, which can be nerve-wracking, especially in busy traffic <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">car maintenance \u2013 you&#8217;ll be spending a lot of time in your car, which means it will experience a lot of wear and tear and it\u2019s your responsibility to fix it <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">solitary \u2013 while some driving instructors may work for driving schools, many operate independently. This means you spend a lot of time alone in the car with your students, which can be isolating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-complete-a-driving-instructor-course\">2. Complete a driving instructor course<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next step is to become a driving instructor trainer. Gov.uk has a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-driving-instructor-training\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">approved driving instructor courses<\/a> on their website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\u2019re ready, you\u2019ll need to take your approved driving instructor (ADI) test, which has three parts: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">theory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">practical<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">instruction<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-part-1-theory-test\">Part 1 \u2013 theory test <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theory test for driving instructors is very similar to the one you take when learning to drive. But as you might expect, the questions are more difficult than the standard theory test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s split into multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are <strong>100 multiple choice questions<\/strong> and the pass rate is 85 per cent. This covers things like road procedure, driving law, traffic signs and signals, and teaching techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there are <strong>14 hazard perception questions<\/strong> \u2013 you\u2019ll need to get 57 points to pass this part of the test. This will test your driving awareness and reaction times by showing you a number of video clips with at least one hazard to spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you fail your theory test, you can re-take it as many times as you want until you pass. Once you pass, you can book the second part of the test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-part-2-practical-driving-test\"> Part 2 \u2013 practical driving test <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this section of the test, you\u2019ll need to demonstrate your driving ability. You\u2019ll be assessed on these skills: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">dealing with difficult road situations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">awareness of pedestrians and other road users <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">understanding of lane discipline and road procedures <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">excellent handling of the vehicle <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">judgement of speed and potential hazards <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being able to show a high level of skill when manoeuvring the vehicle is important as you\u2019ll need to explain this to a learner. During your test, you\u2019ll be asked to perform two manoeuvres such as: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">parallel parking <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">reverse bay parking <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">driving into a bay then reversing out of it <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">stop on the right side of the road, reverse for two car lengths, then rejoin traffic <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">pull up next to a car and reverse into the space to the rear of the car \u2013 you need to stop near the curb within two car lengths of the car <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To pass this part of the test, you\u2019ll need fewer than five minor and no major faults.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-part-3-instruction-ability-test\">Part 3 \u2013 Instruction ability test <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final section of the test will examine your teaching ability. You\u2019ll be teaching a real learner a lesson you\u2019ve planned, while an examiner assesses your teaching skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll be judged on your lesson planning, risk management, and teaching strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To pass this section, you\u2019ll need to score at least 31 out of 51 \u2013 any less and you\u2019ll fail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/adi-part-3-test\/what-happens-during-test\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">government&#8217;s site<\/a> for more details on what areas you\u2019ll be marked on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-how-long-does-it-take-to-become-a-driving-instructor\">3. How long does it take to become a driving instructor?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amount of time it takes to become a driving instructor will vary depending on how much time you dedicate to it. On average, it takes between six and 12 months to become a fully qualified instructor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Logistically, you can be delayed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/request-copy-criminal-record\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">DBS checks<\/a> and availability of exams too. It\u2019s best not to rush the process and make sure you\u2019re prepared for each stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as you gain more experience, you might consider opening your own driving school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-driving-instructor-salary\">4. Driving instructor salary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how much does a driving instructor make? This depends on a range of factors. Most driving instructors charge by the hour, so the amount of hours you work plays a big part in your earning potential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcareers.service.gov.uk\/job-profiles\/driving-instructor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">National Careers Service<\/a>, a typical working week is between 30 to 40 hours and the average salary for an experienced instructor is \u00a330,000 a year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bear in mind that you\u2019ll need to pay tax on this amount and there are lots of overheads you\u2019ll need to cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-how-much-does-it-cost-to-become-a-driving-instructor\">5. How much does it cost to become a driving instructor?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are multiple costs associated with becoming a driving instructor. You\u2019ll have to pay for the tests as well as official certification. The tests cost: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\u00a381 for part 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\u00a3111 for part 2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">\u00a3111 for part 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll also need to have a trainee driving instructor licence to complete part two and three of the exams \u2013 this costs \u00a3140. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then it\u2019s \u00a3300 to get our official approved driving instructor certificate once you\u2019ve completed the tests. Bear in mind that you\u2019ll renew this certificate every four years and it\u2019ll cost \u00a3300 each time you do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth considering the cost of having a car with dual controls (the extra set of pedals in the passenger seat for the instructor). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can buy dual controls and have them fitted to your personal car, but many instructors avoid this if they can. Alternatively, you can buy a car that already has the pedals installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-start-planning-lessons\">6. Start planning lessons <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to take many things into consideration when planning a lesson. These are the kinds of things you\u2019ll want to think about: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">choose an appropriate route for the learner <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">make sure its suits the learner\u2019s level of experience <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">recognise where the student needs to improve <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">be ready to adapt your approach to what the learner wants to focus on <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">make sure you give yourself enough time to get from lesson to lesson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-check-the-legal-requirements-to-become-a-driving-instructor\">7. Check the legal requirements to become a driving instructor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has certain legal requirements that you\u2019ll have to meet to become a licensed driving instructor. You must: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">be over 21 years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">have had a licence for three years that\u2019s in the category you want to teach in (car\/motorcycle\/lorry) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">have fewer than five points on your licence <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">not have been convicted of a violent, sexual, drug-related, or financial crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">not be banned from working with children <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">be able to read a licence plate from 27.5 metres away (with or without glasses) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-register-as-a-self-employed-driving-instructor\">8. Register as a self-employed driving instructor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019re a qualified ADI, you\u2019ll need to register as self-employed and pay tax through the <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/self-employed-tax-changes\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1514\" >Self Assessment process<\/a> by 31 January every year. You can also work for a driving school but many driving instructors work for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"\/knowledge\/starting-out\/how-to-become-self-employed\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1418\" >Going self-employed<\/a> sometimes seems like a big step but it also opens up a lot of opportunities for you to grow in a trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-how-do-you-find-students-and-grow-your-business\">9. How do you find students and grow your business?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019re a qualified ADI and ready to teach, building your customer base will be a priority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are traditional <a href=\"\/knowledge\/marketing\/how-to-advertise-your-business\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1410\" >marketing strategies<\/a> you can use to connect with potential customers but there are other techniques to consider: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">signage on your car \u2013 this is a common way to advertise your services. It can attract attention from potential students when you\u2019re driving on the road in your local area <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">partner with driving schools \u2013 if you\u2019re looking for learners right away, an established driving school in your area may refer students to you <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">offer an introductory discount \u2013 this can attract new students and encourage them to try your services  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-how-much-is-driving-instructor-insurance\">10.
