It helps you work out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">what rate of duty and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/business-tax\/how-much-is-vat-online-vat-calculator\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1408\" >import VAT<\/a> you should pay<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">whether the duty is suspended<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">whether you need a licence to move your goods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">if your goods are covered by Agricultural Policy, anti-dumping duties, or tariff quotas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commodity codes are also known as trade tariff codes or HS codes (harmonised system tariff codes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tariff codes mean your product can be recognised worldwide using a specific code, so there\u2019s no hold-up due to language barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-hs-code\">What is an HS code?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An HS (harmonised system) code is a six digit code, which is set by the World Customs Organisation and used globally. Most commodity codes use an HS code as a base, with extra digits added depending on the country or territory the goods are passing through.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to note that while the terms HS code and commodity code are often used interchangeably, they\u2019re not exactly the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whatarecommoditycodesusedfor\">What are commodity codes used for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commodity codes are used for making customs declarations when importing and exporting goods to and from the UK. You declare the value and content of the goods that you\u2019re importing or exporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The declaration is a legal document that lets customs authorities know you\u2019re paying the right amount in tax and duties. The declaration also lets you and the authorities know whether the items are subject to licences or permits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problems with the declaration can hold up your items at the border \u2013 so it\u2019s important that the information you provide (including your commodity code) is accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Brexit, you now need to make customs declarations when importing and exporting goods from the European Union (EU). If your goods are specifically described under a subheading, choose that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this example, we\u2019re specifically looking for women\u2019s sports trainers, which are best described by the subheading: \u2018For women: Sports footwear; tennis shoes, basketball shoes, gym shoes, training shoes and the like\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the worst cases, if you use the wrong commodity code and you don\u2019t end up getting the right licences and permits, you\u2019ll be breaking
