And with the latest government eclectic car grants, now could be a great time to invest in one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read on to find out more about the pros and cons of having an electric vehicle for your business, as well as a rundown on some of the best electric business cars and vans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can businesses get grants for electric cars and vans?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government launched a new electric car grant on 16 July 2025 to make it cheaper to own an electric vehicle. Grants of \u00a31,500 or \u00a33,750 are available towards the cost of new cars bought for \u00a337,000 or less.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/how-to-apply-for-vehicle-eligibility-for-the-electric-car-grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Find out more about the grants<\/a> and check the list of eligible vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.find-government-grants.service.gov.uk\/grants\/plug-in-van-and-truck-grant-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Plug-in Van Grant<\/a>, which launched in 2012 and is open for applications until 31 March 2026. This offers a discount of up to \u00a32,500 on eligible small vans and up to \u00a35,000 for eligible large vans. Some trucks can be sold at a 20 per cent discount.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"theprosandconsofelectriccarsandvansforbusiness\">The pros and cons of electric cars and vans for business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric vehicles have many financial and environmental benefits for businesses. However, there are some cost and performance downsides that you\u2019ll need to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whataretheadvantages\">What are the advantages?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>the running costs are much lower<\/strong> \u2013 charging an electric vehicle could cost you a fraction of what you\u2019d usually be spending on fuel <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>there are clear environmental benefits<\/strong> \u2013 one electric car can save approximately 1.5 million grams of CO2, according to EDF Energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>there are tax benefits<\/strong> for business owners who have electric vans and vehicles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whatarethedisadvantages\">What are the disadvantages?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>most electric vans won\u2019t be able to travel as far as diesel or petrol vehicles<\/strong> without needing to be charged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll need to install a charging point at home or at work<\/strong>, which is an extra cost to consider<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>the initial cost of buying an electric car or van for your business is likely to be higher<\/strong> than buying a petrol or diesel vehicle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"canbusinessesgetgrantsforelectriccarsandvans\">Travel incentives for electric vehicle owners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have to travel into urban areas for work, there&#8217;s a range of benefits to having an electric van or car:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">in London, electric vehicle owners don\u2019t have to pay the congestion charge, saving \u00a315 a day (until 24 December 2025)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you\u2019ll also be exempt from paying \u00a312.50 a day as part of the <a href=\"\/knowledge\/vehicles\/ultra-low-emission-zone-business-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1554\" >ultra low emission zone<\/a> (ULEZ)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">there are similar <a href=\"\/knowledge\/vehicles\/ultra-low-emission-zone-business-guide\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1554\">low emission zones<\/a> in Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Bath, and Oxford<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"electriccarchargingpointsforbusiness\">Electric car charging points for business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the reasons some business owners are unsure whether to buy an electric van or car is due to the cost and availability of charging points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to this, the government has introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/electric-vehicle-chargepoint-grants#electric-vehicle-homecharge-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">electric vehicle chargepoint grants<\/a>, which offer up to \u00a3350 towards the cost of installing electric vehicle charge points at your property or vehicles for your business?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you buy a vehicle for your employees to use as a company car, they\u2019ll need to pay company car tax and you\u2019ll need to pay National Insurance at 15 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The benefit in kind tax rate for employees with electric cars is currently three per cent (from April 2025), an increase from two per cent. This rate will increase every year until at least 2029-30).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means it\u2019s now a lot cheaper to have an electric company car. What\u2019s more, the benefit in kind tax rate for vehicles with higher emissions vehicles is significantly higher, meaning electric car drivers can save on tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see how much tax you might pay with HMRC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/calculate-tax-on-company-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">company car and fuel benefit calculator.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric vehicle owners are also exempt from the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">van benefit charge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">fuel benefit charge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">fuel duty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you buy an electric business vehicle personally (rather than as a company car), you can claim 45p per mile as a business <a href=\"\/knowledge\/self-assessment\/self-employed-expenses\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1511\">travel expense<\/a>, despite the cost of an electric vehicle being an estimated 4p per mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"theenvironmentalimpactofelectricbusinessvehicles\"><strong>Car tax now applies to electric vehicles&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric vehicle owners now need to pay car tax (vehicle excise duty), following new rates introduced on 1 April 2025:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>first year rate<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a310 for the first year of ownership for cars registered on or after 1 April 2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>standard rate<\/strong> \u2013 from the second year onwards, the standard rate of \u00a3165 a year will apply<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>expensive car supplement <\/strong>\u2013 if you buy an electric vehicle that costs more than \u00a340,000 when new from April 2025, then an additional rate will apply for five years <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><strong>hybrid rate<\/strong> \u2013 from 1 April 2025 hybrid cars pay the same as for diesel and petrol cars (\u00a3195)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"theenvironmentalimpactofelectricbusinessvehicles\">The environmental impact of electric business vehicles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government aims to encourage more people to use electric cars and ultimately ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2030. What\u2019s more, all new cars and vans will need to be 100 per cent zero emission by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/may\/21\/65m-households-uk-electric-car\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Research from Ofgem<\/a> suggests that more than 6.5 million households have plans to buy an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle. It\u2019s recommended for most business drivers, whether you\u2019re driving in the city or on motorways, and will set you back \u00a342,500+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ford E-Transit Custom<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This large electric van has a range of 209 miles between charges. Its strengths include a high load volume and long electric range. Buying this electric van will cost you over \u00a376,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ford E-Transit&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bestseller, this electric van has a long range of 196 miles and a spacious and practical interior. To buy new, it costs just over \u00a351,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Renault Kangoo E-Tech<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a powerful van with an electric range of up to 186 miles. It can carry decent load volumes and costs between \u00a327,015 and \u00a338,385 to buy new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3 of th<\/strong><strong>e best electric cars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Renault 5<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This car has a range of 193 miles but with the 52kWH battery it can go an impressive 353 miles. It\u2019s got a stylish choice of colours, a large boot, and costs just under \u00a330,000 new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tesla Model 3<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla boasts fast charging with the brand\u2019s Supercharger network, and offers a model with fast acceleration and good storage too. The range on a single charge is said to be 318 miles, and it retails between \u00a339,990 and \u00a359,999 new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kia EV3<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An affordable electric car that can cover 270 miles between charges (or there\u2019s a long range model that can cover 375 miles). It\u2019s suitable for a smooth drive around town or on the motorway. This model costs between \u00a333,005 and \u00a343,005 new.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"shouldyoubuyorleaseanelectricvehicleforbusiness\">Should you buy or lease an electric vehicle for business?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are good reasons to take either approach.
