Read on for the full results of our report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1 in 3 female entrepreneurs have experienced sexism as a business owner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through our <a href=\"https:\/\/get.simplybusiness.co.uk\/empowering-women-in-business\/\">Empowering Women in Business<\/a> initiative, we want to help female entrepreneurs overcome sexism and bias in business, and improve their skills and confidence as a business owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our report found: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">one in three<strong> <\/strong>(32 per cent) female entrepreneurs have experienced sexism as a business owner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">one in five (19 per cent) face unequal access to opportunities <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, a staggering 91 per cent of <a href=\"https:\/\/ied.eu\/blog\/entrepreneurship-blog\/tips-on-becoming-a-successful-female-entrepreneur\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">women business owners<\/a> say gender bias or inequality is prevalent in business, with a third describing it as \u2018widespread\u2019 or \u2018severe\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key challenges for women in business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our findings reveal experiences of sexism and gender bias in business: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">over a fifth say investors, colleagues, or customers make quick assumptions about them, or underestimate them when compared to male counterparts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">one in five don\u2019t feel they&#8217;re taken seriously compared to males in their industry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">15 per cent of female entrepreneurs don\u2019t feel they have a loud enough voice, or are heard enough compared to men<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, a further 16 per cent of women say they\u2019re not taken as seriously when pitching their product or business. Here\u2019s what they told us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What needs to change?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>% of female business owners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More people calling out gender bias or inequality as it happens<\/p>\n\n<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">45%<\/p>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greater exposure and education on the issue<\/p>\n\n<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">43%<\/p>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unconscious gender bias training throughout all businesses, alongside more equal benefits (e.g. maternity\/paternity pay)<\/p>\n\n<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">39%<\/p>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dedicated female business and investor programmes<\/p>\n\n<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">37%<\/p>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greater access to support for funding, mentorship and networks<\/p>\n\n<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">34%<\/p>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experiences from small business owners across the UK  <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Female entrepreneurs and business owners have experienced gender bias and sexism across all industries and regions of the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jenny, who works in Leisure and Tourism in North West England, shared her experience: \u201cUnlike many other types of inequality with business, reporting bias within these interactions is unmeasured and therefore unseen. Even at times when I\u2019ve been included, my voice has not been valued compared to my male counterparts and I\u2019ve had my ideas stolen or attributed to a man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Samantha Small, owner of Mother Shipton Inn pub and restaurant in Knaresborough, said: \u201cAs a woman who both heads a busy kitchen and runs the business as a whole, it still astounds me how many people will direct comments or business advice to my male partner. Everything from oven repairs to new suppliers. It&#8217;s a bug bear, but unfortunately, something that I&#8217;ve had to learn to deal with.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting women in business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to what would help support women with running their business, we discovered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">41 per cent said the <strong>chance to network <\/strong>with other female business owners <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">38 per cent said a one-to-one <strong>mentorship<\/strong> from a business expert <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">a further third want to hear more <strong>tips and advice from leaders <\/strong>in their industry <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes as a quarter of female entrepreneurs struggle with confidence in business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarina Stokes, Head of Operations at BFG Print Ltd, shared her challenges: \u201cI have not felt confident giving myself the title of business owner as I know most people associate business ownership as a male-dominated area. I call myself head of operations as I know many people do not think a female could own a company.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UK report into gender bias and inequality in business\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q_fOpBTIBs0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;The world needs you and your business&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the challenges, 96 per cent of female entrepreneurs would recommend starting a business to other women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s heart-warming to see: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">32 per cent describe running a business as \u2018rewarding\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">92 per cent of female business owners feel &#8216;confident&#8217; about the next 12 months running their business, with 40 per cent \u2018very confident&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allegra Chapman, co-founder of diversity and inclusion consultancy Watch This Sp_ce said: \u201cIn our coaching work we come across so many brilliant women with amazing business ideas who are holding themselves back because they\u2019re convinced they\u2019re not ready, or they\u2019re not the right person to run a business, or they\u2019re not good enough, or they won\u2019t be taken seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTake the plunge and get stuck in as soon as you can.
