Use this overview to carry out further research if you need to, including a <a href=\"\/knowledge\/marketing\/how-to-do-a-competitor-analysis\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1229\">competitor analysis<\/a> or <a href=\"\/knowledge\/strategy\/how-to-do-business-swot-analysis-template\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"944\">SWOT chart<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"costofgoodssoldcogsforcostpluspricing\">Cost of goods sold (COGS) for cost-plus pricing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses that sell physical products and carry an inventory will need to know their <strong>cost of goods sold (COGS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding COGS can help you price a product and maintain a steady cash flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You only include costs involved with providing a product to customers, excluding those that aren\u2019t directly or indirectly involved in production. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xero.com\/uk\/resources\/small-business-guides\/how-to\/how-to-start-a-business\/pricing-strategies-cogs\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Xero<\/a> says to look for expenses that \u201conly occur when a service or good is provided\u201d or that \u201cgo up and down as sales go up and down\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are <strong>variable costs<\/strong> and won\u2019t usually include rent for your premises, or fixed staff wages, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Variable costs might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">transport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">manufacture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">storage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">distribution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you know the COGS, you can then add your <a href=\"\/knowledge\/income\/how-to-calculate-profit-margin\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1422\">profit margin<\/a>. This is <strong>cost-plus pricing<\/strong>. You can express this purely in monetary terms or as a percentage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re looking at a 30 per cent profit margin, take your COGS and <strong>divide<\/strong> it by <strong>one minus your profit margin as a decimal<\/strong>.
