And perhaps more importantly, how to find angel investors? Here\u2019s our explainer.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"angelinvestorsmeaning\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Angel investors meaning<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An angel investor is a person (or group of people) with money to spare, looking for the next big opportunity to not only invest and make a return, but also to share their expertise and build a business.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a clich\u00e9, but when thinking about angel investors, the BBC\u2019s Dragon\u2019s Den might spring to mind. While the drama is heightened for TV, broadly speaking the concept is the same.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"howdoangelinvestorswork\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do angel investors work?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually, angel investors will be looking for innovative businesses that have the potential to scale and grow quickly. These businesses might have invented brand new products, technology, or services that solve huge customer pain points. But they need a combination of funding, expertise, and connections to take their business to the next stage of its journey.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angel investors will invest in return for a stake in your business. This could be up to 50 per cent but is usually smaller (between 10 and 25 per cent, according to the British Business Bank). This is based on your business\u2019s valuation, which is why the BBC\u2019s Dragons grill business owners on how they\u2019ve <a href=\"\/knowledge\/management\/how-to-value-a-business\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1453\" >valued their business<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that you don\u2019t just get funding in return for a stake in your business. The big draw in working with these types of business investors is the time they spend with you, working on (and growing) your business. It\u2019s therefore important that you work with a business angel who you have rapport with.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"shouldyouuseangelinvestors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should you use angel investors?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"nba-body-001\">\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firstly, work out whether angel investment is right for your business. If it\u2019s in its early stages (pre-revenue, pre-profit, or profitable early stage), you have clear plans to grow and you don\u2019t mind giving away a stake in your business, it might be an option. Also consider these:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">your <a href=\"\/knowledge\/business-tax\/what-is-business-turnover\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1577\" >turnover<\/a> should typically be less than \u00a35 million<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you should be looking for between \u00a315,000 to \u00a3500,000 in funding<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you\u2019ll be working with your angel for a number of years, so be prepared for a proper two-way relationship \u2013 it\u2019s not just about the money<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, make sure that you\u2019re prepared with your story, pitch, and plan before looking for angel investors. The British Business Bank has a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-business-bank.co.uk\/finance-hub\/angel-checklist\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">angel investment checklist<\/a> you can use to get ready \u2013 some of the key tips include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">you should know exactly how much money you need, along with a clear reason for why you need it and a plan for how you\u2019ll use it<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">it\u2019s important to have a compelling story about you and your business as part of your pitch \u2013 angels make decisions quickly, and will be able to sense a great opportunity in moments<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">prepare projections and your growth strategy, to get across exactly where your business is going (and where you want it to go)<\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">understand what you want from your angel \u2013 is it expertise, their connections, or a brilliant working relationship?<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some guides and templates that can help you work on your business\u2019s story:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/strategy\/how-to-write-a-business-plan\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1199\" >Free business plan template<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/strategy\/how-to-write-a-business-proposal\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1003\" >How to write a business proposal<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplybusiness.co.uk\/knowledge\/marketing\/how-to-advertise-your-business\/\" data-type=\"knowledge\" data-id=\"1410\" >How to advertise your small business<\/a><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"howareangelinvestorsdifferentfromotherinvestors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are angel investors different from other investors?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angel investment is often compared with venture capital, but there are big differences. Firstly, venture capital firms are businesses in themselves, rather than individuals. Venture capital involves board members, other employees, as well as private investors, all expecting a big return on their investment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With that in mind, there\u2019s usually bigger sums involved with venture capital (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginstartup.org\/how-to\/difference-between-angel-investment-and-venture-capital\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to Virgin StartUp, venture capital firms are unlikely to invest less than \u00a31 million<\/a>). They take longer to make decisions on investment and are more likely to invest in proven businesses, rather than early-stage startups.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"howtofindangelinvestorsintheuk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to find angel investors in the UK?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trade body for angel investors is called the UK Business Angels Association (UKBAA). It says that the first port of call should be your personal and professional network \u2013 referrals from people you already know can help you get a crucial introduction.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UKBAA says it\u2019s important you don\u2019t approach people just asking for money. Instead, look for support and guidance and communicate a strong story about your business \u2013 this will filter through your network.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, try to network with other entrepreneurs working in the same industry. Again, ask for guidance and feedback and try to build a strong relationship, rather than asking for funding. The UKBAA says that <strong>LinkedIn<\/strong> and <strong>industry events<\/strong> are strong places to start.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukbaa.org.uk\/member-directory\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The UKBAA also has a member directory<\/a> you can use to look for angel investors. It\u2019s free, but you\u2019ll need to sign up for an account.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, you could also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/articles\/3D0rSm9tMLy9m9wJth7Fl7S\/apply-to-enter-the-den\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">apply to go on the BBC\u2019s Dragon\u2019s Den<\/a>. Tellingly, the BBC says applications go through \u2018casting criteria\u2019, so the producers won\u2019t just be looking for compelling business pitches. But if you get on the programme, it\u2019s not only a great funding opportunity \u2013 it\u2019s huge publicity for you and your brand.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, there are networks that help connect businesses with angel investors. The British Business Bank runs the Regional Angels Programme, which &#8220;aims to raise the profile and professionalism of angel investment activity&#8221; across the UK.
